As the U.S. Director, Senior Counsel of Volvo Financial Services, Sherry Lowe Johnson provides legal advice on critical issues related to equipment leasing and financing in support of all facets of VFS’s U.S. operations. She negotiates transactional matters and drafts company documents and policies, in addition to training employees on industry-related legal and compliance issues and managing litigation by collaborating with outside counsel.

VISION FOR THE FUTURE:

“A substantive increase of women in leadership roles in our industry undoubtedly will enhance thought-provokers as well as providers and will stretch our business acumen to different heights and accomplishments. Combined with our male counterparts, limits become limitless.”

Before serving on ELFA Women’s Council and Motor Vehicle Subcommittee, she served as a member of the Legal Committee. She was a speaker and author on industry-related bankruptcy and litigation issues, collaborated with the ELFA community on legal and business issues and continues to assist the ELFA State Legislation and Regulatory Subcommittee on proposed bills and regulations that may impact industry business affairs. Involvement with the ELFA has provided a terrific entrée of networking opportunities for Johnson, as she worked with several people from VFS on committees and panels, which led to representing VFS on equipment leasing and financing matters and eventually being offered an internal position with the company.

“Having worked with Sherry in her ELFA capacities, bringing her to Volvo Financial Services was an easy decision,” says Bonnie Michael, VFS U.S. vice president, legal and general counsel. “And since joining VFS, Sherry’s strong work ethic and willingness to take on new challenges have shown through again and again.”

Lowe Johnson considers her proficient assessment of issues and alternative points of view two of her greatest assets. She works to render complex legal issues into easy-to-understand theories in litigation and transactional matters, resulting in client loyalty and sought-after representation.

“Sherry’s grasp of various issues and how they interfaced with the business and international concerns gave our team an edge in negotiations,” adds Linda Weber, director of strategic credits, Fifth Third Bank. “Sherry demonstrated the ability to trouble shoot concerns as they presented themselves while using strong reasoning skills to develop multiple strategies to maximize our options and minimize our timelines, which befitted us in reduced losses.”

Lowe Johnson’s industry work doesn’t just end with VFS and the ELFA. She also mentors law students and new attorneys, encouraging them to stretch their strategic thinking and to explore opportunities in the equipment leasing and finance industry, something she also encouraged among teenage troop leaders when serving as a board member of the Girl Scouts.
