Alaska Air Poised to Acquire Virgin America

According to The Street, citing industry sources, Alaska Air is poised to win a bidding war with JetBlue for Virgin America with an offer that values Virgin at more than $2 billion including debt.

The Street noted, according to one source, although the deal wasn’t finalized, Alaska and Virgin are close enough that a transaction could be announced before markets open on Monday, April 4, 2016.

The Street said a combination of Alaska and Virgin America would push past JetBlue as the nation’s fifth largest carrier, and allow the two largely niche operations to become more competitive on a national scale.
