John Deere has acquired Sentera, a Minneapolis-based provider of remote imagery and agronomic analytics, in a move to enhance its precision agriculture capabilities and digital farming tools.
The acquisition brings Sentera’s advanced drone-compatible cameras and FieldAgent software under the John Deere umbrella, expanding the company’s ability to deliver real-time, high-resolution crop data to farmers and agronomists. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We’re excited to add Sentera’s talented team to our organization,” said Chris Winkler, director of digital software and solutions at John Deere. “Combining Sentera’s imagery capabilities with the John Deere Operations Center will help farmers turn data into actionable insights throughout the growing season.”
Sentera’s technology enables high-resolution plant-level monitoring, weed detection, and customized herbicide prescriptions through tools like SMARTSCRIPT Weeds, which can be deployed with precision sprayers. The company’s solutions integrate with most major drone platforms, allowing farmers to gather crop data at scale.
“As a customer of both John Deere and Sentera, the value of this integration is clear,” said Nick Einck, director of agronomy at Chandler Coop in Minnesota. “We can be more efficient and deliver even better outcomes for our customers.”
Sentera was backed by investors including S2G Investments, Continental Grain Company, Middleland Capital, and iSelect Fund. Cascadia Capital advised Sentera on the transaction.
The acquisition reflects growing investment in agricultural technology by major industry players as demand increases for integrated, data-driven tools in farming.
