Survey Reveals 15 Hottest Equipment Sectors

Medical equipment, oil/gas/energy and machine tools are the hottest equipment sectors in 2012, according to a recent survey of asset managers and consultants by the Independent Equipment Company in cooperation with the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association.

The results of the 2012 “What’s Hot/What’s Not” Equipment Leasing Trends Survey, released at the ELFA Equipment Management Conference in San Antonio, TX, illustrate that lessors are becoming more responsive to opportunities and market conditions.

Survey respondents ranked 15 equipment types as follows, in order from highest-rated to lowest-rated:

  • Medical
  • Oil/Gas/Energy
  • Machine Tools
  • High-Tech/Computers
  • Trucks/Trailers
  • Rail
  • Construction
  • Telecom
  • Marine/Intercoastal
  • Plastic
  • Aircraft
  • Container/Chassis
  • Automobiles
  • Furniture, fixtures and equipment
  • Printing

The survey results were positive overall, with six of the 15 equipment types earning a “very positive” outlook and only one type (printing) earning a “very negative” outlook. The results are not quite as good as the 2011 survey, which showed a “very positive” outlook for a stunning 11 of the 15 equipment types and a “very negative” outlook for none. However, the results represent a dramatic turnaround from the 2010 survey, which showed a “very negative” outlook for 11 of the 15 equipment types.
