President Trump announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports.
Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump stated that the tariffs would apply to imports from all countries, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The president also indicated that reciprocal tariffs on nations taxing U.S. imports would be enacted “almost immediately” after an announcement, Bloomberg reported.
The proposed tariffs signal an aggressive shift in U.S. trade policy that could impact industries reliant on steel and aluminum, particularly those in manufacturing, construction and energy sectors.
According to the Journal, the administration sees these levies as part of a broader strategy to address trade imbalances and counteract foreign subsidies, which officials argue disadvantage American producers.
