U.S. Airlines Turn to Used Jets in Cheap Fuel Environment

According to Bloomberg, Southwest and other U.S. airlines are turning to second-hand jetliners from developing nations because older and less efficient aircraft are more economical due to cheaper fuel prices.

Bloomberg reported that lower fuel costs led to roughly $19 billion in earnings by U.S. airlines in 2015.

Bloomberg also noted that this emerging trend has not inhibited airlines from making new aircraft orders, as used jets can be flown on select routes and used less heavily without endangering the recovery of capital costs.
