The U.S. used truck and trailer market showed mixed results in March, with some vehicle segments experiencing modest gains while others continued to decline, according to Sandhills Global’s latest market report.
Inventory of used heavy-duty trucks, for instance, ticked up just 0.24% from February but remains down more than 23% from the same period last year. Day cab trucks led the month-over-month inventory increases, up 2.18%, while sleeper truck inventory has fallen sharply year over year — down more than 40% (Sandhills Global, March 2025).
Asking prices in this category barely moved in March, rising just 0.06% month-over-month, though they were down 6.31% from a year ago. Day cab trucks saw the sharpest year-over-year asking price decline at 7.35%. Auction values followed a similar path, decreasing 0.52% month-over-month and 6.6% year-over-year, with used sleeper trucks seeing the largest monthly drop at 1.27%.
In the semitrailer market, inventories remained relatively flat, decreasing 0.24% from February and 11.75% year over year. Among trailer types, flatbeds increased 5.95% in inventory while dry vans posted the largest monthly decrease at 2.59%. Reefer trailers led in year-over-year inventory reduction, down 24.35%.
Semitrailer asking prices continued trending down, falling nearly 1% from February and more than 8% compared to March 2024. Auction values in this category, however, edged up slightly — rising 0.59% month-over-month — despite being down 3.13% year over year.
The used medium-duty truck market stood out for growing inventory, increasing 5.45% month-over-month and more than 13% year over year. Dry cargo delivery trucks led the monthly rise, while reefer box trucks surged 56.6% from a year earlier.
Asking prices for medium-duty trucks declined by 1.54% from February and 3.22% from the year prior. The most notable decreases came from moving box trucks and dry cargo delivery trucks, which dropped 3.84% and 8.09% year over year, respectively. Auction values for medium-duty trucks also declined, falling 1.04% month-over-month and 2.5% year-over-year, with reefer box trucks leading the monthly declines.
The report highlights the continuing volatility in the used truck and trailer markets, driven by shifting demand, economic uncertainty, and equipment availability.
