Used Truck Sales Jump 28% in March, Defying Seasonal Expectations

Preliminary data from ACT Research shows U.S. Class 8 same-dealer used truck retail sales rose 17% in March from February, outpacing historical trends.

The jump contributed to a 28% overall increase in used truck sales across all channels last month, according to ACT’s latest State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3–8 Used Trucks report.

“Used truck buyers kept their foot on the pedal in March,” said Steve Tam, vice president at ACT Research. “The market easily outperformed historical seasonality, which called for a 12% month-over-month increase.”

Auction activity followed typical third-quarter behavior, rising 44% from February. Wholesale transactions grew 23%.

“Given the current level of economic and political uncertainty, volumes suggest truckers are taking advantage of available equipment at attractive prices,” Tam said.

The report includes data on average selling price, mileage and age, as well as price breakdowns for top-selling Class 8 models from major manufacturers including Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, International, Volvo and Mack. It is widely used by commercial vehicle dealers to monitor short-term market performance.
