S&P Global has agreed to acquire the Automatic Identification System (AIS) data services business of ORBCOMM Inc., bolstering its maritime and supply chain intelligence offerings.

ORBCOMM’s AIS business provides satellite and terrestrial data used to track and monitor vessels, offering real-time visibility and insights for government and commercial clients worldwide. The technology supports applications in maritime safety, environmental monitoring, regulatory compliance, and logistics.

S&P Global said the AIS business will be integrated into its Market Intelligence division.

“With the uncertainties surrounding global markets and supply chains, this strategic acquisition underscores our commitment to investing in differentiated data and solutions that can help our customers navigate the volatility,” said Whit McGraw, head of Risk & Valuations Services at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

In addition to the acquisition, S&P Global will take a strategic equity stake in ORBCOMM and form a strategic alliance to co-develop new supply chain data products.

“We’re excited to join forces with S&P Global to unlock new intelligence from our deep data resources,” said Sameer Agrawal, CEO of ORBCOMM.

The deal is expected to close in 2025, pending regulatory approval. Terms were not disclosed.

DLA Piper advised S&P Global. PJT Partners and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett advised ORBCOMM.
