Teresa Thacker Cranney’s journey from the farm fields of Paul, ID, to a leadership role in commercial finance is a story of grit, growth and staying grounded. Today, as Director of Underwriting at American Financial Partners, she brings more than 11 years of experience — and a lifetime of hard-earned perspective — to a fast-paced industry that thrives on precision and trust.
Her path wasn’t linear. She graduated from high school and attended college, but chose to start a family instead of completing a degree. She raised four children and is now a proud grandmother. Life threw its share of challenges her way, including becoming a single parent and working as a waitress to support her kids. But she never stopped moving forward.
A turning point came when her brother-in-law offered her a role at his new company, Brahma Lending. “I had no idea what I was doing,” she recalls. “The only advantage I had was knowing a lot about farm equipment and trucking.” What she lacked in formal experience, she made up for with relentless determination. She kept notes, studied every deal and learned what lenders were looking for. Soon, she discovered she wasn’t just learning — she was thriving.
Within two years, she rose to lead the credit department. Her natural curiosity and commitment to learning drove her to attend AACFB and NEFA conferences, where she built lasting relationships with key industry partners. Her leadership and reputation led to a nomination to the AACFB Board, where she served with pride and ultimately became President for the 2023–2024 term.
“Being part of those associations gave me access to experienced mentors in my early years,” Thacker Cranney says. “Serving on the Board let me give back and mentor others starting out just like I did.”
Since joining American Financial Partners nearly three years ago, she has continued to grow and give. She’s proud to be part of a woman-led company where hard work, care and integrity shape every decision. “We go the extra mile — not because someone says we have to, but because we care about the work and the people we serve,” she says.
For Thacker Cranney, the mission is bigger than numbers. She focuses on helping customers build and grow their businesses, and she never loses sight of the families behind every financing solution.
Amy Wagner, CLFP and CEO of American Financial Partners, sums it up: “Teresa stands out in our industry because of how she leads, with humility, wisdom and a quiet conviction that elevates everyone around her. She shines in challenging times, guiding our team with empathy and strength. Her ability to stay true to her values while supporting others makes her invaluable to our company and a respected and admired presence in the equipment finance community.”
As Thacker Cranney puts it, “When you work hard, believe in your ability to grow, and stay open to learning, your potential truly becomes limitless.” Her career is living proof.
“When you work hard, believe in your ability to grow and stay open to learning, your potential truly becomes limitless. I had no idea what I was doing when I started, but I kept notes, worked hard and found out I was good at this — and I liked it.”
