Northteq White Paper Examines the Real Meaning of “Best Practices” in Equipment Finance Origination

The white paper argues that "best practices" in equipment finance loan origination isn't a theory exercise — it's what 150+ lenders have already learned the hard way.

Every equipment finance lender eventually builds out the same core functions — sales intake, application capture, credit underwriting, documentation, funding, compliance. What varies widely is how long that build takes, and how many costly lessons get learned along the way.

A new white paper from Northteq, “Why Start From Scratch When 10,000 Equipment Finance Users Have Already Figured It Out?”, looks at what separates a workflow built on trial and error from one built on accumulated, proven pattern recognition. The paper argues that while a generic credit scorecard can be built quickly by any well-resourced team, knowing which scorecard weights actually hold up across real deal volume, different company types, and shifting regulatory requirements is a different problem entirely — one that only shows itself after years of live implementations.

The report draws on data around the pace of change hitting the industry, including growing borrower expectations for fast, low-friction digital experiences and rising AI adoption among both lenders and their customers. It also touches on where time and accuracy get lost in the origination process, from application intake through pre-funding controls, and what that means for underwriter ramp-up and institutional knowledge as teams grow or turn over.

The paper includes perspective from Ethan Keeler, Co-Founder and President of Sage Creek Capital, and Greg Bourdon, Co-Founder and COO of ElmBlue Equipment Finance, on where their own teams found the biggest gaps between what they assumed they’d need to build and what actually mattered.

Northteq built the paper’s framework — its Best Practices Workflow — from work alongside more than 150 equipment finance lenders and 10,000 daily platform users, and the report walks through how that experience translates into the nine functional areas of a modern origination process.

Readers can download the full white paper here for the complete breakdown, supporting data, and additional lender commentary.
