The average retail price for Class 8 used trucks dropped 6.2% in February, marking the steepest month-over-month decline since June 2024, according to ACT Research.

Year over year, prices were down 13%, and 8.2% lower year to date, the firm reported in its latest “State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks” update.

ACT Used Class 8

“Same dealer used Class 8 retail truck sales ticked slightly higher in February,” said Steve Tam, vice president at ACT Research. “The 0.9% month-over-month increase was directionally consistent with but not as strong as the expected 5% seasonal advance indicated by history. January is typically the fourth weakest sales month of the year, running more than 3% below average.”

Tam said underlying fundamentals that drive used truck demand and pricing remain unsettled.

“To say the underlying fundamentals that drive used truck demand and pricing are in a state of flux right now would be a significant understatement,” he said. “Starting with on-again, off-again tariffs, business owners, including truckers, are finding it particularly challenging to make decisions, including purchasing trucks. As demand falls, so will used truck valuations.”

ACT’s report includes data on average selling price, mileage, and vehicle age across a sample of Classes 3-8 used trucks. It also breaks down average selling prices for top-selling Class 8 models from major manufacturers, including Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, International, Volvo and Mack.
