Marcela Melendez has solidified her place as a notable figure in the equipment finance industry. She has a distinguished career with more than 30 years of experience, including the last two decades focused primarily on lease finance. She first joined First Bank Chicago in 2019 as vice president of lease finance, then quickly rose to the company’s chief lending officer of lease finance. Her rapid ascent reflects not only her depth of expertise, but also her exceptional leadership skills and strategic vision.
A significant aspect of Melendez’s career has been her ability to bridge the gap between leasing companies and banks, giving her a unique perspective that distinguishes her in the industry. Having placed transactions with banks and purchased transactions from leasing companies, she understands both sides of the equation. This dual expertise is highly valued in an industry where structuring deals effectively and comprehending the entire lease lifecycle are paramount.
“I have been in lease finance for 30 years, and Marcela was a fierce competitor,” Randy Green, executive chairman of First Bank Chicago, says. “With her leasing background, she knows how to structure deals and understands the lease life cycle from both perspectives. With her extensive knowledge and incredible leadership, I have been able to step aside and let her run with it.”
Melendez’s career is a testament to her relentless pursuit of knowledge and continuous professional development. Throughout her career, she has sought mentorship from industry veterans and has never shied away from complex projects or navigating challenging situations. Her proactive approach to learning has led her to tackle a variety of tasks, including leading a significant Latin America initiative. This project required her to delve deeply into the complexities of equipment financing in a region known for its unique risks. It was yet another example of Melendez embracing challenges head-on and turning them into opportunities for success.
Melendez’s leadership style is defined by collaboration, open communication and transparency. These qualities have been instrumental in fostering a dynamic and cohesive environment within the lease finance group at First Bank Chicago. By breaking down silos and encouraging cross-functional teamwork, she has enhanced the group’s efficiency and enabled quick decision-making, resulting in superior service for clients.
“I had the good fortune of being surrounded by very knowledgeable and caring people,” Melendez says. “I was eager to learn and did so by asking questions, taking on complex projects and overcoming challenges that ultimately opened the door to new opportunities.”
Melendez’s influence extends beyond the office. She is actively involved in shaping the future of the industry through her role on the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s (ELFA) Bank Business Council Steering Committee. Her commitment to education and empowerment is evident in her roles as a board member of Harper College and an executive member of the HOPE Giving Circle, where she works to support and mentor students in achieving their educational goals. Her dedication to paying forward the guidance she has received in her own career highlights her passion for helping the next generation of leaders.
Melendez’s drive, adaptability and commitment to both personal growth and the growth of others make her a trailblazer in the equipment finance industry. Her ability to continuously evolve, combined with her focus on collaboration and mentorship, solidifies her reputation as a leader who not only achieves personal success, but also genuinely cares about and elevates those around her. •
