Ed Hetherington has spent over five decades shaping the equipment finance industry through longevity, adaptability and a drive for change. Since launching his career in 1973, he’s worked across nearly every aspect of the business, built global programs with partners and led teams to results. One of his standout contributions was co-developing a global virtual captive program for a major equipment manufacturer, giving the company captive-like benefits without the cost and risk. That program still exists today and continues to enable equipment sales globally.
Known for his “Edisms,” a collection of quotes, excerpts and sayings, Hetherington uses them to build team culture and support decision-making. His management style is direct, focused on turning small issues into training opportunities to prevent bigger ones.
A longtime champion of technology, he sees AI not as a threat, but as a tool to enhance customer value. “If you do not like change, you will like irrelevance even less,” he says, underscoring his belief that resisting change is more dangerous than embracing it.
Now 73, Hetherington remains deeply engaged, especially in captive and virtual captive innovations. One of his favorite Edisms, “Challenge, Create, Disrupt!” reflects his belief in progress and resilience. His impact on the industry comes from growing leaders, reshaping partner relationships and building strategies that still drive equipment finance forward.
