“The key to success is balance: retain what’s worked well in the past but carefully add the most promising innovation. Don’t fear change or simply bury your head in the sand; actively embrace it and become the master of it.”
– Tom Ware
Tom Ware, Founder of Tom Ware Advisory Services, has spent his career bridging two worlds that rarely speak the same language: traditional lending and modern data analytics. He built the first half of his career as a lender in equipment credit and general management roles, then spent the second half immersed in data, analytics and modeling, giving him a rare ability to translate the concerns of each discipline to people fluent in only one.
That combination fueled the work Ware is proudest of his years at PayNet, where he led development of the MasterScore and created a range of industry indices, comparative performance analysis tools and loss-given-default models, all in pursuit of bringing genuine science to lending decisions. A respected client recently described him in a press release as an architect of modern commercial credit analytics.
Ware’s leadership philosophy has always centered on surrounding himself with the smartest, most driven people he could find, deliberately building teams that span a wide range of disciplines, experiences and perspectives. Over the years, his own role has shifted accordingly: rather than supplying every answer himself, he now works to stretch and develop the people around him, stepping in only where he can add unique value.
Ware sees today’s rise of artificial intelligence the way he views every major industry shift, as a moment to balance the lessons of the past with careful investment in the future. His advice for the next generation is not to fear the change AI will bring, but to actively master it, pointing to how automation transformed farming a century ago and has already doubled productivity across equipment finance over the past two decades.
