The average retail price for used Class 8 trucks rose 5.6% month-over-month in March, marking the largest increase since March 2022, according to the latest State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks report by ACT Research.
“On a year-over-year basis, prices were 6.0% lower, while falling 7.7% year-to-date,” said Steve Tam, vice president at ACT Research. “Besides the usual factors that influence used truck prices, such as mileage, age, and condition, a number of other considerations are likely affecting recent pricing changes.”
Tam pointed to slowing new truck sales as a key factor, which is stemming the flow of trade-ins into the used market. The shortage of new trucks is also pushing traditional new truck buyers to the secondary market, tightening freight-hauling capacity and supporting used truck prices.
ACT’s Used Classes 3-8 report provides data on average selling price, miles, and age based on a sample of industry data. It also tracks average prices for top-selling Class 8 models from major OEMs, including Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo). The report is widely used across the commercial vehicle industry to monitor shifts in the used truck market.
