Preliminary Class 8 same-dealer used truck retail sales rose 8.6% in April, according to ACT Research’s latest State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks report.
“Used truck buyers did not let up in April, driving preliminary Class 8 same dealer used truck retail sales volumes higher,” said Steve Tam, vice president at ACT Research. “The market crushed historical seasonality, which called for an 11% month-over-month decrease.”
Auction sales followed their usual post-quarter-end retreat, falling 57% from March, while wholesale transactions climbed 36% month over month.
In total, April preliminary used truck sales dropped 20% month-over-month, combining all channels. Despite the mixed signals from both inside and outside the industry, Tam said buyers continued to take advantage of a well-stocked — but not overstocked — inventory of affordable equipment.
ACT’s report includes data on average selling price, miles and age based on a sample of industry data, along with pricing insights for top-selling Class 8 models from major OEMs such as Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, International, Volvo and Mack. The report is used across the commercial vehicle industry to assess near-term performance trends in the used truck market.
