James A. Viola has been appointed president and CEO of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, becoming the sixth person to lead the organization since its founding in 1970.
Viola succeeds Pete Bunce, who held the position since 2005.
Before joining GAMA, Viola served as president and CEO of Vertical Aviation International, previously known as Helicopter Association International. He led the organization through a rebranding process that broadened its focus to include emerging sectors in vertical aviation.
Viola also spent more than a decade at the Federal Aviation Administration, most recently as Director of General Aviation Safety Assurance. In that role, he oversaw safety oversight activities for the general aviation sector. Earlier in his career, he served over 20 years as a U.S. Army aviator, retiring with the rank of colonel.
He holds master’s degrees in strategic studies and international relations, and is both an Airline Transport Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor. Viola has logged over 8,000 flight hours, including 1,100 using night-vision goggles.
GAMA represents manufacturers of general aviation aircraft, engines, avionics, and related technologies worldwide.
