Rick Kurz, President & Head of Flagstar Equipment Finance

Flagstar was recently named a Market Leader in the Construction asset class, ranking among the top 20 lenders/lessors by new business volume. We sat down with the bank to talk strategy, technology, and what’s next for the industry.

What factors do you attribute to this strong performance?

Market leadership is earned one relationship at a time. Our recognition reflects the strength of our team, the trust we’ve built with customers and industry partners, and our disciplined approach to serving the construction market. We’re also benefiting from our One Bank strategy, which allows us to bring the full breadth of Flagstar’s capabilities to our customers. We’re proud of this recognition, but we view it as validation of our strategy — not the finish line.

How does Flagstar differentiate itself in the highly competitive construction equipment financing space?

Price matters, but it’s rarely what determines whether a construction project moves forward successfully. Contractors place just as much value on certainty of execution, responsiveness, and working with a financing partner that understands how their business operates. Flagstar differentiates itself by combining specialized equipment finance expertise with the capabilities of a full-service commercial bank through our One Bank approach.

What trends are currently shaping your construction equipment financing strategy?

One of the biggest trends we’re watching is that contractors are becoming increasingly disciplined in how they deploy capital, evaluating equipment purchases against project backlogs, labor availability, utilization expectations, and long-term business strategy. Infrastructure investment continues to support equipment demand, while higher equipment costs and evolving interest rate expectations are driving more thoughtful capital planning.

How are the needs of construction industry customers evolving, and how is Flagstar adapting to meet them?

Today’s construction customers expect more than access to capital — they expect speed, transparency, and financial partners who understand the realities of running a construction business. We’re continually refining our processes to deliver faster decisions and a more seamless customer experience without compromising sound underwriting.

Can you share an example of a recent deal or financing solution that demonstrates Flagstar’s approach to serving this market?

While we always respect customer confidentiality, one recent transaction illustrates our approach well. We worked with a growing contractor that needed to expand its fleet quickly to capitalize on new project opportunities while preserving liquidity. Rather than viewing the request as simply an equipment financing transaction, our team worked across multiple areas of the bank to deliver a structure that supported both immediate equipment needs and longer-term financial strategy.

How has technology — from credit decisioning to equipment and fleet management tools — changed the way you work with construction customers?

Advances in digital workflows, analytics, and automation are reducing turnaround times while allowing our teams to spend more time advising customers and structuring solutions instead of managing manual processes. We’re also seeing customers leverage fleet management technology to gain better visibility into equipment utilization, maintenance schedules, and total lifecycle costs.

What role do partnerships (with equipment dealers, OEMs, or other industry players) play in Flagstar’s construction business?

Partnerships are fundamental to our success. Strong relationships with dealers, manufacturers, OEMs, vendors, and referral partners provide valuable market insight and help us respond quickly as customer needs evolve. We view these relationships as long-term collaborations built on trust, consistency, and mutual success.

How does your risk management approach adapt to the unique cycles and challenges of the construction industry?

Construction has never rewarded lenders who chase market cycles — it rewards institutions that remain disciplined through them. Our approach combines deep industry expertise, thoughtful underwriting, and active portfolio management to support customers responsibly across changing economic conditions.

Looking ahead to 2027, what opportunities and challenges do you see for construction equipment financing, and how is Flagstar preparing for them?

We believe the long-term outlook for construction remains positive, supported by infrastructure investment, equipment replacement demand, and continued economic and population growth across many regions. We’re preparing by investing ahead of demand — not only in technology, but in experienced people and specialized industry expertise.
