“Leadership requires bridging the gap between technical infrastructure and business strategy. I believe in empowering teams to leverage data for smarter decision-making, ensuring that every automation or integration we build directly strengthens our relationships and drives long-term, scalable success.”

Ian Lockwood, data science analyst at Dakota Financial, entered the equipment finance industry in late 2024 with a background in marketing analytics. He was immediately drawn to the sector by the rare opportunity to design modern technology solutions within an environment that possessed minimal existing digital infrastructure. What began as a focused data analytics role quickly expanded into custom development, systems integration and automation. Consequently, his perspective has shifted significantly; he no longer views the industry solely as a traditional lending business, but as a complex, data-rich ecosystem with substantial potential for growth through strategic technological innovation.

His most significant professional achievement over the past 18 months is the development of a live, bidirectional API integration between Dakota Financial’s Salesforce CRM and their primary lease management platform. This project delivered immediate business impact by eliminating the need for users to navigate between disparate systems, which reduced licensing costs and streamlined daily operations. Furthermore, the integration enabled sophisticated real-time analytics, allowing the firm to break down deal performance by broker to identify high-quality business sources. This work reflects his broader problem-solving philosophy: leveraging technical tools to create scalable improvements that simplify the user experience while driving revenue.

Lockwood is a passionate advocate for evolving leadership development in equipment finance. He argues that the industry must bridge the disconnect between business strategy and technical literacy. As organizations invest in automation, leaders cannot afford to be disconnected from the infrastructure their teams build. Future success requires developing leaders who possess both business acumen and technical fluency, ensuring decisions remain grounded in both relationship expertise and data-driven reality.
