“My leadership is shaped by Roosevelt’s ‘Man in the Arena’ and Denzel Washington’s ‘Don’t Confuse Movement with Progress’ quotes. I believe it’s important to never stop learning, to listen and stay curious, to lean on those with more experience, to remain grateful and to pass along your knowledge to the next generation.”
As a senior product manager at Great American Insurance Group, Ian Steidel was drawn to the equipment finance industry because of its diversity and strong emphasis on human connection. Although his path into the industry began unexpectedly in 2012, he was immediately captivated by the sector’s broad reach and collaborative culture. Once Steidel experienced that culture firsthand, he recognized it as a place where he could build a meaningful career and make a lasting impact.
Steidel’s approach to problem-solving is grounded in the philosophy that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Most recently, he was selected to lead a major strategic initiative focused on shaping the future of Great American Insurance Group’s specialty equipment division. He began by taking a “10,000-foot view” to ensure alignment around the overall objective before breaking the work into manageable, actionable pieces.
As a leader, Steidel prioritizes empowerment, autonomy and accountability. He believes in giving his team a clear understanding of the “why” behind the work while allowing them the flexibility to determine the “how” and “what.” Rather than micromanaging, he focuses on supporting and developing his team, helping guide them forward instead of “pulling” them along. He also encourages cross-training and expanded responsibilities to build confidence and create opportunities for growth. By investing in his team’s long-term career development and fostering independence, Steidel has cultivated an environment where accountability, innovation and professional growth go hand in hand.
