Cathryn Massinburge, Nexseer Capital – 2023 NextGen 40 Under 40 List

Cathryn Massinburge, Vice President of Human Resources, Nexseer Capital

Throughout Cathryn Massinburge’s more than seven years at Nexseer Capital, she has worked her way up through the company, achieving her bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis on human resources and her SHRM-CP certification status. Last year, Massinburge also served as a volunteer for the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s Emerging Talent Advisory Committee.

“What makes me a unique leader is that I truly believe that I am only as strong as my team members,” Massinburge says. “I strive to nurture and empower those around me so that we can succeed together.”

The secret to Massinburge’s success is maintaining proper work-life balance while being a remote employee. Although Massinburge has been working remotely since 2018, she has made it a positive experience by making it a point to travel to the company’s offices for company events, team building exercises and training courses.

“I think it is critical that I connect with team members in person to continue to build rapport and relationships,” Massinburge says. “There is something special about connecting in person that cannot be replaced by video meetings or phone calls.”

Massinburge has found that being present while working from home can be possible with equal amounts of organization and focus. She believes the key to finding balance is creating a schedule that includes two or three non-negotiable tasks you want to accomplish every day without fail. “You will find yourself beginning to prioritize your workday better so that you have time for your non-negotiables, and you may even realize that you were spending too much time on low-hanging fruit,” Massinburge says.
