Joshua Smith, Arvest Bank – 2023 NextGen 40 Under 40 List

Joshua Smith, Equipment Finance Vendor Program and Product Manager, Arvest Bank

Joshua Smith has found success in his career by clearly defining outcomes, constantly finding sources of motivation and always planning to execute with the ability to pivot. The conditions for success, according to Smith, also require you to ask the questions to determine what you are trying to accomplish, why it’s important and who will benefit so you can outline an effective plan and execute it. “However, the ability to adapt to changes during the process is what really what allows you to be successful,” Smith says.

Smith recently took on a new position as a product manager at Arvest Bank, adding to his responsibilities as an equipment finance vendor program manager. In the new role, he is helping to facilitate the implementation of a new banking core for the bank. Smith is well equipped for leadership roles because during his time at Arvest Bank, he has held every position that falls under his current management jurisdiction. His perspective allows him to make decisions based on a real understanding of their impact on the business and its employees.

Smith finds work-life integration challenging but possible. He says that highly motivated people want to pour everything they have into being successful, which results in an imbalance of the time and resources available for their home lives. According to Smith, this imbalance can lead to a decline in productivity due to burnout, resentment and other inevitable negative outcomes, even if they do not happen immediately. To combat such an imbalance, Smith encourages others to set boundaries for themselves and stick to them so they can learn to manage their time and priorities appropriately. Successfully setting boundaries can ensure employees enjoy the benefits of both a productive work life and a fulfilling life outside of work.
