According to the June 22, 2018 Baker Hughes rig count, the U.S. accounted for 1,052 active rigs, up 111 from 941, or 11.8%, from a rig count on June 23, 2017.
Baker-Hughes noted that the 1,052 total was comprised of 930 horizontal rigs, 60 vertical rigs and 62 directional rigs.
Baker Hughes has issued the rotary rig counts as a service to the petroleum industry since 1944, when Hughes Tool began weekly counts of U.S. and Canadian drilling activity.
