BB&T, SunTrust Win Merger Approval from US Antitrust Authorities

According to multiple outlets, BB&T and SunTrust Banks have won U.S. antitrust approval from the Department of Justice for their previously announced merger.

The deal may go through provided the banks divest themselves of at least 28 branches in three states.

Provided the deal is also approved by the Federal Reserve System and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the merged entity will result in the sixth largest bank holding company in the United States.
