ISM: Manufacturing Activity Contracts Again in January

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in January for the fourth consecutive month, but the overall economy grew for the 80th consecutive month, according to the January Institute for Supply Management Report on Business.

The dip in manufacturing activity came did not lead to a PMI decrease, as the January PMI reached 48.2%, a 0.2% increase from the December reading. However, January’s PMI failed to reach 50%, which is the threshold for manufacturing expansion. In October, the PMI registered at 50.1%, which was the last month in a 34-month streak of expansion in the manufacturing sector.

Along with a slight rise in the PMI, there were other positive signs as the new orders and production indexes both increased in comparison to December. The new orders index read at 51.5%, an increase of 2.7% compared to December. Meanwhile, the production index came in at 50.2%, marking a 0.3% increase month-over-month.

The employment index took a sizable hit, falling 2.1% to 45.9%. A reading below 50 in each index indicates contraction.
