Philadelphia Phillies Baseball Legend Larry Bowa to Speak at Converge

Lisa Rafter, publisher and CEO of Monitor, will interview Larry Bowa, former shortstop for the Philadelphia Phillies, at Converge on May 16. The interview will address Bowa’s career, his decades with the Phillies — including winning the 1980 World Series — and his recent hole-in-one at Spring Training.

Bowa has had an extensive baseball career, earning his title as one of the best shortstops in Phillies history with a career spanning 16 seasons, 12 of which he spent in Philadelphia. Bowa’s notable career achievements include the following:

  • Winning two Gold Glove Awards (1972 and 1978).
  • Being named a National League All-Star five times (1974, 1975, 1976, 1978 and 1979).
  • Setting a then MLB record for the best fielding percentage in a single season by a shortstop in 1971 and 1972 (.987) and again in 1979 (.991).
  • Setting a then MLB record for fielding percentage by a shortstop (six errors in 146 games in 1979).
  • Playing a pivotal role in the history of Veterans Stadium by securing the first hit in the ballpark’s history on April 10, 1971.

Post-retirement, Bowa had an impressive career in baseball management and coaching, including managing the Philadelphia Phillies from 2001 to 2004. He also served as a coach for various teams, including the San Diego Padres, Anaheim Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels), Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees. Currently, Bowa serves as a senior advisor for the Phillies Baseball Club.
